Where Should you Build your Chicken Coop?

Your Chicken Coop’s location is as important as the physical location of your house! So what do you need to check for?

Firstly, if your chickens are your pets, then you will want to keep an eye on them and have them close by. So, keeping them close to your house is a good option, although not so close that you can hear them ruffling their feathers at night.

If you live in a cold environment and need to run heat lamps or lighting down to your coop, you will need to be close to power. It can be quite costly to run power cables far away from your house, so keep this in mind if you do need power to the coop.

Finally, make sure you keep your coop in a well drained area so that when it rains, rainwater will drain away easily without trying to wash your chickens away from their coop. One of the benefits of the smaller, mobile coops is that you can drag them away to higher ground if need be.
