How to Raise Chickens – 5 tips on Raising Chickens

Do you wish to raise chickens from the comfort of your own home? There is nothing more satisfying than sitting down to a scrambled egg, courtesy of your own flock and in this article I am going to give you 5 tips on raising your own chickens.

At first, it may seem like a lot of work preparing to raise chickens, but they actually require little daily care and you will soon experience the benefits of raising your own chickens once you start.

Here 5 tips for successfully raising your own chickens.

1. Housing

Chicken Coops do not need to be extravagent, or expensively designed. Chickens simply need somewhere to roost in the evenings and somewhere they can be protected from predators. Plans for simple chicken coops can be found in many books or on-line, to suit most people requirements.

2. Food

Chicken feeders are cheap and easily available and come in a variety of styles.

3. Water

Having a watering station raised above the ground is more practical than simply having a water bowl or dish as the latter can be quite messy and will require more attention.

4. Storage for Feed

A metal bin is ideal for the storage of the chicken feed, as pests such as rats which also enjoy the feed will be prevented from accessing it.

5. Nesting Boxes

These are not necessary, but they are an easy way for you to collect the eggs laid. You can make your own or purchase one from your local farm supply store. Check out this article on chicken coop designs..

By researching your options and having a clear idea in your head how you would like to run things, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to successfully raise healthy and happy chickens.

A great eBook that help with Raising chickens has been written by Martin Ashway who provides a huge amount of information on raising chickens in your own backyard.

Top 5 Reasons to Raise Chickens

Raising chickens should not be hard. There are several reasons why people may want to have chickens in their backyard.

Some of these are:

Reason # 1 – Chickens love leftovers!

A chicken’s appetite is incredible. They can eat almost anything, even their own kind! They will eat leftovers from your fridge saving you money on chicken feed. But do be careful what you do give them, and skip the onions and garlic.

Reason #2 – Eggs!

Who doesn’t love eggs? You can have them boiled, scrambled, sunny side up. Furthermore, eggs are high in protein and are extremely good for you. Be honest! Domestic pets that live comfortably inside your houses nothing more than bark, meow, purr and sometimes chirp. Fish, in general, can be eaten, but who would want to eat the family pet gold fish? None of these domesticated animals produce anything edible.
Chickens on the other hand, provide plenty of value!

You can eat fresh eggs right from the source. Either raw (good for pregnant women) or cooked eggs taken fresh from chickens are far more tasty and nutritious than those purchased in the grocery store or supermarket. You will notice the texture and color is very different from fresh eggs.

Reason #3 – Source of natural fertilizers

Your lawn or backyard would never look better. Chickens love to walk freely around. Chickens also love to peck anything they consider as food. And what is food to them? Anything that’s organic. If you let your chickens roam you’ll find out how useful they can be. They eat pests living in your backyard – grubs, beetles, insects, earwigs and anything that comes close.

After digestion, like everything else, poop is generated. But this is not just any kind of poop but the perfect natural fertilizer for keeping the soil health for plants to grow! Cool!

Reason #4 – Low Maintenance Pets

Unlike dogs that need combing and brushing everyday, chickens are not high maintenance. All you have to do is provide them is daily food and water. You also have to clean their chicken coop at least twice a month and change their beddings too.

Aside from just gathering their eggs daily, you could also start a small business of your own by supplying poultry stores with fresh eggs or chicken meat.

Reason #5 – Grass and weed clippers

You’ve got that right. Now you can save on mowing your own lawn by getting yourself chickens! For chickens, grasses, weeds, and leaves are
treats. It’s like having a goat in your own backyard but only better.

So, why bother getting yourself a dog or a cat? With chickens you can have a best friend, family pet, a lawn mower, a supplier of organic fertilizer and an egg producer all in one.
