Chicken Feeder Tips

There are many types of feeders with the most common being the trough and the hanger.

If you are building a chicken coop make sure that your feeders are:

  • Easy to clean
  • Does not let the chicken feed get wet
  • Discourages the chickens from getting into the trough and contaminating with poop
  • Cannot be tipped over the by chickens.

Chickens are social eaters and like to eat at the same time, so ensure the size of the trough is big enough for all your chickens to feed from.

Chickens tends to waste a lot of food, so never completely fill a trough with food.  They like to get in there and you’ll find your feed flying around.  Two thirds full is sufficient
